Are You A Mobile Superhero?

The workplace is quickly being infiltrated by a new breed of mobile superhero — elite workers who rely on and use mobile apps to increase productivity. These men and women have superpowers that soar past anything the Justice League could drum up. This super-connected workforce has the ability to channel the data and apps that smartphones provide, and have made businesses stronger than ever.
Unisys did a research project with Forrester Consulting, conducting surveys with more than 590 businesses around the globe. The researchers found that mobile devices are making workers more productive, making them 35% more likely to collaborate with colleagues than those who are phone-less.
The mobile elite also drive innovation within their companies, compelling their co-workers to accept change through the power of tech.
But every superhero has his kryptonite, and for these smartphone-toting men and women it seems risk-taking is their hubris. They are two times more likely to download unauthorized apps to get work done, putting their companies and fellow workers at risk for a security breach.

Apple OS X 10.8.2

Hot on the heels of the release of iOS 6 (catch our full review here) Apple has just pushed out the update for OS X 10.8.2 which gives a huge set of new features. Most notably you now have single sign on for Facebook, as well as phone number merging for iMessages that are sent to your phone.
Screen Shot 2012 09 19 at 12.13.27 PM Apple releases OS X 10.8.2 with single sign on for Facebook, iMessage number merging and more
There are some other changes that are important as well, as you can see in the full list via the App Store. But the highlight to me is the ability to drop all changes from a document before attempting to Save As. There’s also the ability to see mentions from anyone via Twitter, instead of just those whom you follow. Tweets sent via the Notification Center will also have their URLs shortened.
The update also starts the integration of Apple’s Passbook. You’ll now be able to add items to Passbook via Mail or Safari.
In short, 10.8.2 is the OS X release that brings the desktop OS into parity with the newly-released iOS 6. It’s a substantial update, and it’s free, so get downloading

HTC to launch One S with 1.7GHz Qualcomm S3 instead of S4 processor in India

The HTC One S was supposed to be the underdog between the One X and the Galaxy S III by taking them on with a new-age Qualcomm S4 dual-core processor that had enough cajones to match the capabilities of quad-core processors like Nvidia Tegra 3 and Samsung Exynos Quad. However, that was never meant to be.

We can now confirm the One S will be shipped with a Qualcomm S3 dual-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz rather than the 1.5GHz S4 processor that HTC had promised at MWC earlier this year. Qualcomm is facing a production crunch with its S4 series of Snapdragon processors and is not able to churn out enough silicon as the demand. HTC is having to face the brunt of it, which is a massive disappointment for us.
We are still looking forward to putting the One S through its paces and trust us to push it to its limit. HTC is expected to launch it in India next week.

Moscow's Vodka Cocktail Dens

The iconic tipple in Moscow is of course vodka. It is Russia's national drink. There's even a Vodka Museum in Moscow dedicated to exploring the history of the clear spirit. And according to trendy young Muscovites, that's precisely where vodka belongs: A museum.

"Among the older generation," says Bek Narzi, chief bartender of Moscow's City Space Bar, Russian-made vodka is what's in the glass, "generally consumed chilled and neat, chased with food."

"However, the younger generation is pretty much influenced by the West, and prefers whiskey, rum and tequila."

In Moscow's clubs and bars, those spirits are mixed with juice, most often apple, cranberry or cherry. And yet… vodka retains a place at every Moscow bar. Clearly, a thirst for vodka still exists.

Twisted Vodka Mixes

At the City Space Bar, on the top floor of the Swissotel Krasnye Holmy, vodka-based cocktails account for two of the bar's top three best-selling drinks (edged out by the perennially popular Mojito, made with white rum).

Bartender Narzi has made a name for himself with molecular mixology creations such as the "Nano Mary", a Bloody Mary riff made with vodka and a spiced tomato blend, topped with a radish and honey foam.

For the Expats

Narzi's other recommendations for travellers seeking great cocktails include Strelka Bar, a favourite with expats.

Located in the former Krasny Oktyabr confectionery factory, Strelka is part of the Institute of Media, Architecture and Design. Part of the attraction is the rooftop terrace that overlooks the Moscow River, but it's also noted for its small but well-curated cocktail menu. Bar manager Sergei Chesnokov has also found a way to interest tipplers in vodka, with the Isaev Cocktail (vodka, birch sap and lemon).

Vodka with an Ambience

Delicatessen also makes the shortlist, managed by renowned Western-schooled Moscow bartender-turned-restaurateur Vyacheslav Lankin. Decor includes a fireplace, piano and a fully functional lithographic press. Renowned as a "bar for bartenders", there is no cocktail menu here - after a chat with the barman, drinks are made to order.

Punters are advised to first have that chat before making up their mind about vodka's future in Moscow.

Recipe for Moscow Spring Punch by Bek Narzi of City Space Bar

This vodka-based libation is popular in bars throughout Moscow and St Petersburg, says Narzi. It's also the third most popular drink at City Space Bar, behind the rum-based Mojito and the vodka-based White Russky (similar to the White Russian).

50 ml Vodka
15 ml fresh ginger juice
15 ml fresh lime juice
25 ml raspberry puree
20 ml honey syrup topped with ginger ale

In a highball glass, combine all ingredients with crushed ice and stir. Garnish with a lime wheel, whole raspberry and mint sprig.

Audi Q3

Audi India launches the much awaited compact crossover, the Q3 at a starting price of Rs 26.21 lakh; will rival the BMW X1.

Under the hood will be the familiar 2.0 TDi Quattro diesel engine, which churns out 177PS of power and 380 Nm of torque. As we mentioned, this is the top end version of the Q3 and therefore the engines are mated to Audi's S-tronic gearbox and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The Q3 will go head on against the BMW X1 on the price bracket and the Range Rover Evoque  in terms of size and equipment.

Audi Q3 launched in India at Rs 26.21 lakh

“The launch of the Audi Q3 is in line with our top-down strategy for India. The Q3 is immediately recognizable as the youngest member of the Audi Q family. Now we are starting the next chapter of our success story: As a true luxury SUV, the Audi Q3 leads the way for the Four Rings to enter a new segment in India, with ever increasing customer groups demanding for luxury mobility in a compact form.  Every aspect of the Q3 showcases Audi technology – the body, the drivetrain, the chassis and the assistance and multimedia systems. Mozilla Firefox 13, revamps home page

Mozilla has launched the latest version of its popular web browser Firefox, which now has hit version 13. With this device, Mozilla has redesigned the home page of the web browser the Home Page now includes icons at the bottom of the page to give you easy access to bookmarks, history, settings, add-ons, downloads and sync preferences with one-click shortcuts.
In addition to this, Mozilla has also revamped the tab experience as the user will now see thumbnails for the most frequently and recently visited websites like competing web browsers like Google Chrome.
As far as memory optimizations are concerned, Firefox 13 now loads the web page being viewed by the user first while restoring a session and then loads the background tabs when the user clicks on them which helps Firefox start faster and use less memory.
Firefox now supports SPYD by default for more secure browsing which is the successor the HTTP protocol and reduces down time while loading web pages. This extra speed will be noticeable when one loads SPYD enabled sites like Google or Twitter.

HTC One V

The One V will probably end up outselling both of them due to its price. It’s also when you consider the price is when you realize that its specs are perfectly in line with what other phones in that price have to offer. The One V even has a couple of things that the others don’t, such as Android 4.0 pre-installed and an aluminum unibody. Let us take a closer look at this phone.

DesignUnlike the One X and the One S, the One V’s design isn’t particularly original. It looks practically identical to the HTC Legend that came out two years ago. Having said that, other than the basic shape, no two parts on the two phones are identical. The One V is thinner, narrower, shorter and lighter than the Legend. There are no physical keys below the display, nor is there an optical trackpad. There are also several other minor differences.
image1

The One V’s design is much more refined and sophisticated than Legend’s. The front of the phone looks a lot simpler and cleaner. You will notice that the display area is slightly raised above the aluminum body and is not completely flush. Above the display is the earpiece underneath a long grille. Unfortunately, the One V does not have a front facing camera.

image2

Below the display are the three capacitive keys like the other One series phones that consists of the back, menu and multitasking keys. Finally, there is the characteristic chin that was much more common on older HTC phones but has faded over the years.

image3

image4

On the left side of the phone, we find the micro USB port. Unlike the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V, there is no micro HDMI port here. On the right are the volume control keys, which, as you may have noticed, have switched sides on recent phones whereas older HTC phones always had them on the left.

image5

On top of the phone are the 3.5mm headphone jack, power button and the notification indicator. The indicator is design in a way such that it can be seen from the front, top and the rear of the phone, although it’s brightest when seen from the top.

image6

On the back is the 5 megapixel camera lens with the LED flash near the top. At the bottom is a small plastic cap that comes off and conceals the SIM card slot and the microSD card slot. Unlike the other One series phones, the One V does not support micro SIM cards. What it does have in common is the battery, which is non-removable.

You will also find the loudspeaker placed underneath the plastic cap and due to the angle of the chin it doesn’t get covered when you place the phone on a surface.

image7

The One V uses an aluminum unibody design, similar to the Legend. The metal surface has a really nice matte finish with a coarse texture. This makes the phone feel really great and light years ahead of the cheap, plasticky phones you usually see in this price range (Read: Xperia neo V). Build quality is great too and the phone feels well put together. Despite the metal construction, the phone is surprisingly light.

DisplayThe HTC One V has a 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 resolution, Super LCD coated with Corning’s Gorilla Glass. The display on this phone is really amazing. Warm, rich colors in particular look great. Other things such as black levels, viewing angles, outdoor visibility are also excellent. We’re glad to say that HTC has continued their tradition of using top-notch LCDs on their phones, despite their pricing.

Hardware and SoftwareThe HTC One V has a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 SoC that includes a 1GHz Scorpion CPU and Adreno 205 GPU. In terms of memory you get 512MB, which is a downgrade from some of the older HTC phones such as the Desire S, Incredible S and the Rhyme that had 768MB.

As for storage space, HTC claims to offer 4GB of internal memory but all you get out of that is a meager 1GB. The only purpose of this memory is to install apps. Since the phone also needs another memory for storing photos and videos in case the user does not plug in a microSD card, HTC has given a ridiculously low 95MB of memory that exists just for the sake of it. As such, a memory card for this phone is a must. Thankfully, the phone comes with an 8GB memory card.

Then you have the usual connectivity features that include HSPA, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS and USB 2.0. The phone supports Wi-Fi Direct for directly communicating with other Wi-Fi Direct devices without having to go through a router or an access point. There is no GLONASS or NFC support.

image8

Music and videos The HTC One V comes with the Beats Audio branding that is now starting to become common on HTC phones. Even here it is nothing more than a sound effect that boosts the volume and the bass in the music and for some reason HTC thinks this makes the music sound the way the artist intended. Apparently musicians think everyone uses HTC phones with Beats Audio.

Anyway, coming back to the phone, we had some major issues with the audio quality on the One V. At first we thought this might be an issue with only our handset but after an online search it revealed that some others too have been experiencing it.

Basically, if you use a sentive pair of earphones you will be hearing a lot of CPU and radio noise in the background that sounds like the kind of sound you hear when you place a mobile phone that is on a call next to a speaker set. The noise is not constant but kicks in whenever you start playing something with sound, which can be anything. It does not change with the volume, which is why it is most noticeable when the volume is low. It’s also inconsistent, so at times it will be quieter than usual.

The reason for this could be poor EMI shielding. A similar problem was seen on the Samsung Galaxy S II that used the in famous Yamaha DAC. We are not sure what DAC HTC is using but it’s clearly not very good. We didn’t face this issue on the One X.

The problem is, if your phone has this issue, there is nothing you can do about it. You can get it replaced (good luck explaining it to your usual store keeper) but there is no guarantee that the new phone won’t have this issue either. It does matter what earphones or headphones you use. Sensitive in-ear earphones will make the noise that much more apparent than bigger, open back headphones. Also, at higher volumes it’s not really noticeable at all, so you can try that as well.

Moving over to video playback, the stock video player can play videos in AVI, MP4, MKV and WMV formats. As usual, the phone does not have support for AC3 or DTS audio, which leaves half of the MKV files without any audio. We tried playing some videos in DicePlayer app and they all played well up to 720p resolution. The videos look great on the display and even the loudspeaker sounds very nice. Too bad you still hear the static sound in the background when you use earphones.

Battery Life The battery life on the One V is pretty good. With regular usage the phone would last us for a day and a half. In our video playback test, the phone lasted for almost five and a half hours, enough to play a movie thrice and still have plenty of power left.

Verdict Few days ago we gave the HTC One V the honor of the best all-round smartphone under Rs. 20,000 and we stick to it. There are a few other phones such as the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V and LG Optimus Black but none of them match the One V in terms of overall performance.

What tilts the odds in the HTC’s favor are the premium build quality and finish, superb display, good camera, good battery life and the latest version of Android. Unfortunately, things are not perfect, what with the occasionally sluggish performance and the high amount of noise through the headphone jack.

Still, for Rs. 17,435, the HTC One V is very good value for money and one of the best smartphones you can buy today.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands on Review:

Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands on 6 Samsung Galaxy SIII Hands On Review: First Impressions

Design: To be frank I was not impressed by the design of Samsung Galaxy SIII when it was first announced. In the press shots the mobile was looking ugly. But in reality the design is not that bad, actually the Pebble White version looks nice. Samsung Galaxy SIII is available in two colors Pebble Blue and Marbel White. The Marbel Blue version is very fingerprint magnet and the rear side of mobile catches fingerprint quite easily. The device feels great in hand, despite of having 4.8 inch the device is not that big. At 133gm weight it feels very light weight and 8.6 mm thickness makes it easy to handle. Samsung Galaxy S3 is not much bigger than Samsung Galaxy SII.
Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands on 4 Samsung Galaxy SIII Hands On Review: First Impressions

Screen: Samsung Galaxy S3 has 4.8 inch SUPER AMOLED HD display. It does’t have the ‘Plus’ after name, so it uses pen tile matrix technology which is inferior to the full RGB AMLOED screen which Samsung Galaxy SII has. The screen looks great, offers good colors, contrast and has amazing viewing angle. Pen tile screen will not be a problem as pixel density is high. It is a pleasure to watch videos and photos on the huge screen. I’m sure you will love the screen of Galaxy S3.
Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands on 7 Samsung Galaxy SIII Hands On Review: First Impressions

User interface: It runs latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 with Samsung’s TouchWiz skin. I’m not fond of this Touch Wiz skin, but this time Samsung has modified the skin and made it better than previous versions. The user interface is silky smooth there is no lag during operation, applications and games were opening fast. The quad core 1.4 GHz processor and powerful Mali 400 MP GPU really helps to accelerate in user interface speed. Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with many new software features like S-voice, Direct call, Smart stay, Smart alert, S beam, Buddy photo share, Pop up play etc. I’ve tried some of these features like S-voice, S Beam, Pop up Play and they worked nicely. Sometime S-voice doesn’t recognize commands, so it needs more optimization. Overall the user experience is great, I’m very happy with it.

Camera: Samsung Galaxy SIII has the same 8 MP camera like its predecessor Galaxy SII. But this time it is using different sensor which offers better picture and video quality. The camera interface is identical to Galaxy SII. Some new features have been added to the camera like the Best Shot feature which takes multiple photos in burst mode and gives you the best photo among them. Camera offer many shooting modes like Smile shot, Beauty shot, Cartoon shot etc.

Samsung Galaxy S3 hands on video – Camera, Task manager, Game hub, S Suggest:

First impression: I’m very much impressed with the Samsung Galaxy SIII. It is undoubtedly the best Android mobile when it comes to features and raw power. It may not be as good looking as HTC One X, Sony Xperia S or Nokia Lumia 900, but you will love the mobile when you use it. Samsung Galaxy S3 costs Rs 43,180 ($800) in India, which is very expensive at this time. But some online stores are already selling this mobile for around Rs 36,000 which is great deal.
